Web Monetization Guide

What is Web Monetization? Web Monetization is an open technology standard that allows content creators to earn money in real time as people engage with their work online. Instead of relying on ads, subscriptions, or platform-specific monetization tools, Web Monetization introduces an alternative and complementary simple and privacy-friendly way for creators to be rewarded directly by their audience. How Does Web Monetization Work? Web Monetization is powered by the Interledger Protocol (ILP), an open protocol that enables instant, secure payments across currencies and networks. Think of ILP as the “internet for money”, it allows small amounts of value (called “micropayments”) to move freely between wallets, just like how data flows across the internet. Here’s how the flow works in simple terms: 1. Supporters install a Web Monetization browser extension and link a wallet that supports Web monetization. 2. When they visit a Web Monetized website, the browser looks for a special HTML tag (<link rel="monetization" href="https://ilp.chimoney.com/username">) that contains the creator’s wallet address (think of it like an email address for payments). 3. If monetization is enabled, the extension shows a green Web Monetization icon, signaling that payments can start. 4. Supporters can choose how much they want to send, but if continuous payments are enabled, small payments are streamed in real time to the creator as the supporter stays on the page—typically at a default rate of $0.60 USD per hour (or $0.01 per minute) if no custom amount is set. 5. The creator receives these funds instantly in their wallet and can withdraw them to their local bank or cash out in supported currencies.
